1Password 3 Upgrade & Migration Questions
Is 1Password 4 for iOS Awesome?
You bet it is.
Ummm…ok, let me rephrase my question. What’s new in 1Password 4 for iOS?
All the fresh baked cookies you have been sending us have really paid off. 1Password 4 is chock full of chocolate chips. No, wait. Those were the cookies. As for 1Password 4, it has been completely rewritten to bring you the best possible experience.
New features include favorites, rich icons, item customization, password generator everywhere, swipe actions, global search, attachment viewing, faster syncing, iTunes file sharing, auto-clear clipboard, and this is just what’s new in Vault Mode; the new dedicated Web Mode brings with it tabbed browsing, automatic credit card and identity filling, and much more. Here is a list of all the new bells and whistles.
All this has been packaged into a wonderful new design that had every bit and pixel polished. Mmm. Security.
Is there anything missing in 1Password 4 for iOS?
1Password 4 was rewritten from the ground up to use the latest technlogies available. During the rewrite we decided not to include the following features:
- Wi-Fi syncing with 1Password 3 for Mac is not available. If you rely on Wi-Fi syncing and do not want to use Dropbox for automatic syncing with Mac, please stay with version 3 for now.
- Support for older devices is not available as 1Password 4 requires iOS 6. This means the first generation iPad, iPhone 3G, and 3rd generation iPod touch cannot run 1Password 4.
In addition to these features, there are several bugs and oversights that are no longer available in 1Password 4. If your heart has a soft spot for any of these bugs, you can continue to play them in 1Password 3.
Sounds great! I’ve received so many free updates over the years, and I don’t know how you are magically still in business. May I pay you guys for all your hard work?
Thanks so much for your support! Are you sure you don’t work here? If we didn’t actually receive emails and tweets from other customers like you, we’d think we were making this stuff up.
1Password 4 is a brand new app and thus is a separate purchase.
I love supporting good software, but I literally just purchased a few weeks ago. Is there anything you can do?
We want everyone to be able to enjoy the wonderful new 1Password 4 and purchasing twice in a few weeks doesn’t sound like much fun.
If you purchased 1Password 3 for iOS after November 15th, 2012, let us know. Simply email your App Store receipt to GiveMe1Password4Please@agilebits.com and we’ll take care of you.
Okay, I’m going to buy my copy of 1Password 4 but do I have to buy a million more copies to use it on all my devices?
1Password 4 for iOS is a universal app. Buy it once and install it on every iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad you can possibly ever afford at no additional cost. There is only one way forward. We call it the Universal Way. It’s not a cult; pinky swear.
Can I really install it on all my devices? Even older devices?
1Password 4 takes advantage of some powerful new features that are only available in iOS 6. That means you must be this tall to ride this ride:
- iPhone 3GS or later
- iPad (2nd gen) or later
- iPod touch (4th gen) or later
But fear not! If you are still rocking an older device, we’ve got you covered. We know that you store your most important information in 1Password — we do too! — so we wanted to make sure you could still use 1Password 3 on your older devices if you needed to. Since 1Password 4 is such a substantial change and requires iOS 6, we decided to sell it as an all new app. That way you can still run 1Password 3 on your older devices without being forced to update.
1Password 3 will continue to be supported, and if you have previously purchased it you will be able to download it from your Purchases section in the App Store. In addition to continued support, 1Password 3 can sync its data with 1Password 4. This allows you to have access to all your data, even on devices that cannot be upgraded to iOS 6. Rock on!
Does 1Password 4 have the same features on all my devices?
1Password 4 has the same features on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
The features are the same but 1Password 4 was specially designed to make the most of each device. The iPhone and iPod touch interface has been optimized for the smaller screen and fits nicely in your pocket while the iPad interface lets you spread out and make the most of the larger display. The features you need and love are all there, so you always have your data handy.
What about Mac and Windows?
You wouldn’t believe how many DVD drives we’ve broken trying to cram an iPhone in there to load 1Password 4 for iOS onto Macs and PCs.
Since there is not yet a way to run iOS apps on a Mac or Windows computer 1Password for Mac and 1Password for Windows are available separately. Free trials are available if you want to kick the tires first.
I meant version 4… Is 1Password 4 available for Mac or Windows?
Not just yet. 1Password 4 for “regular” computers will bring many new features and internal changes that we know you will enjoy. We don’t have a time frame, but this is definitely in the cards. For news and updates, please keep an eye on:

Does 1Password 4 still sync with 1Password 3?
Does it ever! 1Password 4 continues to offer Dropbox syncing across all supported platforms (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7). Not only that, but Dropbox syncing is faster than ever before. After double-checking with our benchmarking expert, the exact number was “double infinity” faster. (Our benchmarking expert may or may not be one of our lead developer’s small children.) In addition to Dropbox syncing, 1Password 4 now supports iCloud syncing across iOS devices.
Yes you heard that right, we now have iCloud support. Right now it is only available for iOS, but shucks howdy is it ever fancy. You can even enable iCloud and Dropbox at the same time. This is super handy if you need to sync with 1Password on one of the other supported platforms where iCloud syncing is not yet available.
How do I get my 1Password 3 data into 1Password 4?
If you have been syncing via Dropbox, simply ask 1Password to sync with Dropbox when you first install the app, and you’re all set (the first time you run 1Password 4 for iOS, there will be an “I’ve used Dropbox before > Sync with Dropbox” option).
If you were not syncing via Dropbox, you’ll want to use the “Import from old version” option instead. That will import the data from an existing copy of 1Password 3 on your device.
I’m ready to buy! Where’s that purchase link again?
Great! All you need to do is jump over to the App Store and search for 1Password. Or better yet, click this link to be taken directly to the 1Password app page.
I loved the screenshots in the App Store and just purchased 1Password 4.
Thank you so much for your support! We wouldn’t be able to continue improving 1Password without awesome customers like you.
